If you’re a gun owner, maintaining your firearm is a crucial part of responsible ownership. Regular cleaning not only keeps the gun functioning properly but also extends its lifespan. However, when you have inquisitive kids or curious pets at home, gun cleaning can become a complex task.

I understand that as a parent or pet owner, your primary concern is the wellbeing of your loved ones. That’s why it’s vital to approach gun cleaning with an added layer of caution. This is more than just following a checklist; it’s about creating a safe and controlled environment for those times when you need to maintain your firearms.

In this article, I’ll guide you through a comprehensive strategy that helps ensure safety for your family, both during and after the cleaning process. We’ll cover securing your environment before cleaning, the cleaning process itself, and the post-cleaning protocols.

As we move forward, remember that these guidelines aren’t just suggestions—they should be seen as strict rules to follow every time you clean your weapons. After all, consistency in safety habits is what creates a truly secure environment for everyone at home.

Securing the Environment: Pre-Cleaning Safety Measures

Before I even gather my cleaning supplies, my priority is to make sure that the environment around me is as secure as possible. This begins with a fundamental step: ensuring that the firearm is completely unloaded. I check the chamber, the barrel, and the magazine to verify that there isn’t a single round present.

Determining an appropriate cleaning area is crucial. It should be a well-ventilated space out of reach of curious hands and paws. I tend to use a table that’s high enough to be inaccessible to my toddler and my pets, and I make it a point to never leave the area unattended while my cleaning tools are out.

An organized approach to selecting and storing cleaning materials safeguards against accidents. I keep my solvents, oils, and other potentially hazardous chemicals in a locked cabinet and only take out what’s needed for the task at hand. Moreover, I store all gun cleaning tools separately from household items, clearly marking them to avoid any potential mix-ups.

I set clear boundaries by creating a temporary ‘no-kids’ and ‘no-pets’ zone. I use barriers or pet gates to physically demarcate the area, and I inform family members, especially older children who can understand the risks, about the boundaries.

After cleaning, disposing of contaminated items like used patches and cotton swabs is just as important as the prep work. I make sure to place these items in a secured receptacle that my kids and pets can’t access—safety doesn’t end when the cleaning does.

Engaging in the Cleaning Process: Best Practices for Parents and Pet Owners

When it comes to cleaning guns at home, timing is critical, especially if you have an active household with kids and pets. Choose a time when there’s less foot traffic, perhaps when the kids are at school or during their nap time. It might mean reorganizing your schedule, but it ensures fewer distractions and reduces the risk of accidents.

If your children are old enough to understand, have a straightforward conversation about the dangers of firearms, emphasizing the need for safety and why they must stay away during cleaning. Use clear language that’s age-appropriate to make sure they grasp the seriousness without instilling undue fear.

Pets can be curious, and this is where basic obedience training can be a lifesaver. Teach commands like ‘stay’ or ‘leave it’ to prevent them from coming close to the cleaning area or handling the cleaning materials. Use barriers or pet gates if necessary to keep them at bay.

All firearms cleaning kits come with small parts which can be choking hazards. Additionally, cleaning solutions are often toxic. It’s crucial to keep these items out of children’s and pets’ reach at all times. Consider investing in a cleaning kit with a secure case featuring child-proof locks.

When you actually begin cleaning your firearm, have everything you need within arm’s reach to prevent leaving the gun unattended. Follow each step methodically, from dismantling the weapon to cleaning and oiling parts, and finally reassembling it. If something interrupts the process, such as a child’s cry or a pet’s distress, secure the gun first before attending to the situation.

The final part of the cleaning includes wiping down surfaces and properly disposing of used materials, like cleaning swabs and patches, to prevent contamination. Place these in a sealed container that is later placed in an area out of reach or immediately disposed of in an outdoor trash receptacle.

Post-Cleaning Protocols: Ensuring Ongoing Safety

Now that your firearms are clean and in pristine condition, maintaining a secure environment is the next crucial step. It’s not just about the cleaning; it’s about the before, during, and AFTER. Here, I share how you continue to safeguard your home, ensuring that your diligence resonates through your routines and habits.

Let’s start with your cleaning aftermath. Double-check the area. Ensure that no cleaning fluids or gun parts are left within reach. Children’s curiosity and pets’ instincts can lead them to explore dangerous leftovers. So, be meticulous here.

Your firearms need a home too. Secure storage is non-negotiable. Whether it’s a locked cabinet, safe, or a dedicated room, make sure it’s inaccessible to children and animals. Combine this with childproof locks and high shelves for added protection against accidental discovery or tampering.

Education is POWERFUL. Take this freshly cleaned gun as an opportunity to teach your children about firearm safety. Knowledge demystifies guns and reinforces respect for their potential dangers.

Adopt a habit of regular safety checks. Peek into the storage areas, make sure everything is in order, and that all safety protocols are still being followed. Staying consistent will embed these practices into your daily routine, contributing to a safer environment for everyone.

To wrap up, gun cleaning is more than an act of maintenance—it’s a responsibility, especially in homes with kids and pets. Embrace this responsibility with enthusiasm, knowing that each step you take is building a safer space for your loved ones, free from preventable accidents.

Hi Les, I hope you find my comments suitable, first the text for the article is very light and harder to read. Disposal of solvents and other possible toxic waste; Doesn’t this need further consideration for disposal? And the storage of such chemicals would ultimately be better stored in a fireproof cabinet You talk about the storage of any firearms in a cabinet or locked room or both I would assume, would not be a wise suggestion to recommend the cleaning in a locked room wherever possible. Having lived in the USA for many years I have seen how much of a hot topic about anything to do with guns can be.  I hope my comments are of help

Thanks, Robby about letting me know about the text. I converted the site to a different theme and didn’t realize the trouble it would bring.

In the near future I’ll get out more information on the disposal of solvents. I have a feeling that every state and city has their own rules for proper disposal. Great suggestions and much appreciated!
